 Conclusions from the international meeting
Ecological Impact of Genetically Modified Organisms

Over hundred ecologically oriented scientists met in Prague, Czech Republic, on November 26 - 29, 2003, to evaluate ecological impact of the genetically modified (GM) crops. Results of current investigations were summarized in more than seventy contributions. One day was devoted to work in small groups of experts that dealt with specific methodological questions. And at the end of the meeting, the participants discussed the role of IOBC (International Organization for the Biological and Integrated Control of Noxious Animals and Plants) in developing the methods of assessing environmental impacts of GM crops and other agricultural practices. Brazil approves GM soy

Thursday, 25 September 2003

Brazil's Vice President José Alencar has announced an imminent decree ending a ban on genetically modified (GM) crops. The Federal Regional Court of Brasilia recently overturned a ruling that allowed the growing and marketing of Monsanto GM soybeans.

The decree will extend permission for the sale of GM soybeans from this year's harvest to include planting starting next month, but is also likely to signal legislation permanently enabling the planting and sale of GM crops. While GM soybean had been banned, many farmers in the Southern states were known to be sowing transgenic seeds acquired illegally from Argentina. Up to 30% of the country's crop is estimated to be GM.

Brazil is the world's second-largest producer of soybeans.

Gene against potato famine

Scouring the genome of a wild Mexican potato Solanum bulbocastanum, scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have discovered a gene that protects potatoes against late blight, the devastating disease that caused the Irish potato famine in the year 1845. Prior to the 1990s, chemical fungicides were available. But new strains of the pathogen have emerged, testing the limits of the technology and requiring American farmers to treat potato fields as many as a dozen times a season at a cost of up to $250 per acre. In warmer climates such as Mexico, fields may be treated as many as 25 times a year with the costly and toxic chemicals. The Wisconsin team showed that the insertion of a single gene effectively protects plants from the range of late blight. pathogens.

Because of European fears of genetically modified crops, and the control exercised over growers by a few large buyers, there is currently no engineered potato in commercial production anywhere.

It is possible to cover all the procedures that use transfer of genetic material into cells of a patient for therapeutic purposes with the term gene therapy (GT). Theoretically GT methodology is applicable whenever molecular nature of a disease is known. As information on molecular mechanism of pathogenesis increases, also the scope of GT indication grows.Entire article ...

EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT REJECTS MOVE TO BAN HUMAN CLONING

On 29 November 2001 the European parliament rejected a move to ban human cloning in the EU by 316 votes to 37. Italian MEP Francesco Fiori, who moved the failed resolution, called for new legislation. Defending his report, he said it was essential to decide now which doors must never be opened by our increasing knowledge of human genetics. The move follows an intensification of the debate over human cloning following the announcement by US company Advanced Cell Technology that they have successfully cloned an early-stage human embryo.  Entire article ...

Greenpeace's favourite paper dragon burned

Nature (Announcing article in Vol. 409, No. 6821, pages 682-683, 2/8/2001): "A 10-year survey of four types of genetically modified (GM) crops has found that they do not survive well in the wild, and are no more likely to invade other habitats than their unmodified counterparts. The study reported in a Brief Communication this week will help allay fears that GM plants will be super-weeds, either in their own right or by breeding with unmodified plants." Entire article ...

You may find a story on Dr. Patrick Moore, ecologist and co-founder of Greenpeace on our web site. Opening the http://www.agbioworld.org/pr/moore.html we learned his Comments to the New Zealand Royal Commission on Genetic Modification: "The campaign of fear now being waged against genetic modification is based largely on fantasy and a complete lack of respect for science and logic. . . . Genetic modification can reduce the chemical load in the environment, reduce the impact on non-target species, and reduce the amount of land required for food crops. There are so many real benefits from genetic modification compared to the largely hypothetical and contrived risks that it would be foolish to ban genetic modification. Entire article ...

How is it with soya?

Soya gets in a focus of attention for two reasons: it is the most common "genetic contamination" in food to a great joy of "activists" and some journalists who can document their vigilance as "protectors" of consumers. Rice with a vitamin and without patents

Everyone of us probably had known an obsession with a certain idea. It is especially often case with scientific workers. Ingo Potrykus, when in 1980 became a professor of the Swiss Federal Technological Institute, had an idea of three billion people depending with their nutrition on rice, and he was especially worried for one tenth of them who suffer a lack of vitamin A resulting often in blindness. The saddest fact is it is mostly children. Their poverty does not allow them to get another food as a source of vitamin A, not mentioning its pharmaceutical form. Potrykus had grown up in the post-war destroyed Germany and he was familiar with hunger quite well when he was a child. Entire article ...
